FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 1, 2023
PHILADELPHIA—On Saturday, Dec. 9, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., WURD Radio will host its seventh annual Empowerment Experience, a holiday marketplace and celebration of cooperative economics and the future of Black commerce.
This year’s Empowerment Experience will be broadcast live from Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church East, located at 2800 W. Cheltenham Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19150. The event – inspired by the Kwanzaa principle ujamaa, or cooperative economics – features a marketplace hosting more than two dozen merchants including many Black-owned businesses selling a diverse range of items for holiday gift-giving. Empowerment is always free and open to the public; attendees are encouraged to register online at wurdradio.com/empowerment.
WURD Radio will focus on the future of retail, economics and commerce with a live-shopping experience on Instagram presented by All Black Everything Pop Up. The livestream will allow social media audiences to interact with established vendors and shop their products. Meeka Johnson, founder and CEO of All Black Everything Pop Up, will share her insights on digital commerce and live shopping trends during a keynote discussion titled “The Future of Black Commerce.”
Johnson will be in conversation with WURD Radio hosts Andrea Lawful-Sanders of The Source and Tonya Pendleton of Reality Check, who will anchor the broadcast for the duration of Empowerment Experience.
“Fresh off of our epic 20th-anniversary celebration, we are excited to continue embracing our community through the Empowerment Experience,” said Sara M. Lomax, President and CEO of WURD Radio. “Creating uplifting and enriching experiences is at the heart of WURD’s business model. We are committed to our community, committed to Black businesses, and committed to circulating the Black dollar to enhance our collective economic power.”
WURD listeners can also tune into Empowerment Experience from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the radio at 900AM/96.1FM, wurdradio.com and the WURD Radio app. There will be a live video stream via WURD TV on WURD’s website, facebook.com/forwurd, and twitch.tv/wurdradio.
Empowerment Experience is presented in partnership with Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church and brought to the public by Comcast, Bank of America, Brown’s Shop-Rite, Dietz & Watson, PECO, Keystone First, Pennsylvania Lottery, The Fitler Club and Herr’s Snack Foods.
