On Tuesday, Donald Trump will deliver the State of the Union Address. When he does, he’ll share the personal stories of everyday Americans and tell us his policies are working. He’ll cite studies and statistics to assure us that things are fine.

But, I don’t think he’ll be speaking from experience.

I doubt that Trump goes to the supermarket like the rest of us. I doubt that he personally sees the cost of everyday items like the rest of us. I doubt that he has to decide between buying food and health insurance like the rest of us, so when he talks about international policy, many Americans won’t care.

We’re not interested in war with Iran. We don’t want to take over Greenland. We’re not looking to run Venezuela. We care about our pockets. We care about our freedom, and the president should focus on both. So, while Trump will tell Americans that the State of the Union is strong, our country is not as united as it could be, and that’s partly because Trump has divided us.

Our union is strongest when people are working in unity. Not when the government seeks to cancel diversity. Not when the government makes voting more difficult to do. Not when the government literally pries our history from the walls.

You can’t erase our past and tell us you’re invested in our future. You can’t tell us we’re invisible, then pretend that you see us. The State of the Union is not about how many immigrants ICE can detain and arrest.

Preserving the State of the Union is about the things that bring us together, not the things that drive us apart. It’s about the things that help us build bridges, not the things that build up walls. Unfortunately, the president specializes in walls. So, if we want to strengthen America’s union, I think we’ll have to do it ourselves.
