On Tuesday, millions watched the blue wave sweep races across the nation as Americans pushed back on the last two years of President Trump’s regime that has left them less than satisfied. The first half of his presidency has been marked by aggressive immigration crackdowns, historically high unemployment rates for Black women, surging prices driven by tariffs and conflict with Iran, and unwavering support for Israel. For the remainder of his term, President Trump will face a Congress with Democratic majorities in both chambers. Voters turned out in record numbers, helping usher in historic wins for diverse Democratic candidates:
  • Juliana Stratton’s victory in Illinois marks a watershed moment: she joins Sens. Lisa Blunt Rochester and Angela Alsobrooks, marking the first time in U.S. Senate history that three Black women will serve simultaneously.
  • In Georgia, Keisha Lance Bottoms became the state’s first elected Black female governor, while Deb Haaland became the nation’s first Native American woman governor in New Mexico.
  • In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed defeated Mike Rogers to become the first Muslim U.S. senator.
Together, these historic achievements signal shifting political appetites that won’t be satiated with business-as-usual agendas from the right and establishment Democrats. Be sure to listen to WURD’s comprehensive coverage, featuring interviews with James Clyburn, Nola Haynes, Chris Rabb, Cory Booker, and more. Here in Pennsylvania, incumbent Gov. Josh Shapiro secured re-election against state treasurer Stacy Garrity with over 60% of the vote, while Democratic Socialist Chris Rabb won Congressional District 3 with more than 90% of the vote. In the very-purple District 1 covering Bucks County and parts of Montgomery, challenger Bob Harvie unseated incumbent Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick. These victories give Democrats control of the governor’s office, House, and Senate in Pennsylvania for the first time in over 30 years. This nationwide political shift is just the beginning. Millions of voters will look to newly elected officials to leverage their power to deliver on key promises, including holding the Trump administration accountable, lowering the cost of living and addressing the war in Iran.
