This week on WURD: The legacy of O.J. Simpson, the Philly Muslim community mourns on Eid, advocacy for a greener Philadelphia

O.J. Simpson passed away Thursday at the age of 76 from prostate cancer. Wake Up With WURD host Solomon Jones dedicates his opening monologue to Simpson’s death and how the acquittal of the 1995 trial riveted the nation and revealed tensions on race and the criminal justice system.

Multiple people were injured in an Eid Al-Fitr shooting that included 1,000 attendees. Police have taken five people into custody and recovered five firearms at the scene. Bilal Qayyum joined Wake Up With WURD with Solomon Jones and Dr. Ahmet Tekelioglu spoke on Evening WURDs with host Dr. James Peterson, both are key people on Muslim affairs and remarked on the tragic event.

Eve Gutman, Media and Research Coordinator at Earth Quaker Action Team, discussed on ecoWURD with host P.O.C. how the faith-led organization has advocated to reduce the corporate giant Vanguard’s leading investments in the world in gas, oil and coal industries. 

Harold Barrow, is a self-sufficiency coach at the nonprofit, ACHIEVEability: an organization working to break the cycle of generational poverty through accessing higher education, affordable housing, health services and more. He joined The Source w/ Andrea Lawful-Sanders to show how the ACHIEVEability mission shaped his life. 

Jude Husein is the Director of State Advocacy for the Pennsylvania State Senate as the only Arab staffer in the General Assembly and Deputy Executive Director of BOLT Philly; she detailed her work on Love & Life with Carol Riddick on how the organization is aiming to cultivate and empower grassroots leaders to lead change.
