This Week on WURD: Sexual assault allegations at Cornell, microplastics in the Delaware River, Pennsylvania’s universal healthcare push

Dr. Janet Rosenzweig, child sexual abuse prevention expert and author of The Sex-Wise Parent, joined Solomon Jones on Wake Up With WURD to discuss sexual assault allegations at Cornell University. Rosenzweig highlighted the heightened risk of campus sexual assault early in the academic year and urged parents, particularly fathers, to teach young people about consent, healthy sexuality and personal responsibility.

Melinda Emerson, entrepreneur, bestselling author and small business expert known as the Small Biz Lady, joined Tech Life Steph on Life in Tech to discuss how AI agents can help small businesses automate routine tasks and increase productivity. Emerson emphasized effective prompting, human oversight and using AI to eliminate business bottlenecks.

Faran Sabik, zero waste advocate with PennEnvironment, joined P.O.C. on Eco WURD to discuss new research finding microplastics at every tested location throughout the Delaware River watershed. Sabik called for stronger restrictions on single-use plastics and policies holding manufacturers responsible for plastic waste, while emphasizing that Philadelphia’s treated tap water remains preferable to bottled water.

Jamie Gauthier, Philadelphia City Councilmember representing the 3rd District, joined Solomon Jones on Wake Up With WURD to discuss efforts to restore the historic Black Bottom neighborhood’s name to city records. Gauthier said approximately 15,000 residents were displaced during urban renewal and called for reparations, institutional accountability and protections against continued displacement in West Philadelphia.

Nikil Saval, Pennsylvania state senator, joined Solomon Jones on Wake Up With WURD to discuss his proposed Universal Health Care Act, which would establish a state-funded health insurance system amid federal Medicaid cuts and rising coverage costs. Saval outlined a payroll-tax funding model that would eliminate copays and deductibles, while acknowledging significant legislative and implementation hurdles.

Jaylen Christie, award-winning writer, cartoonist and creator of Stink Bomb Man: The Brain Kids, joined Tiffany Bacon on The Midday Break Room to discuss his new illustrated novella, Thermosphere, released during World Space Week. Christie emphasized the importance of Black representation in comics and using superhero stories to inspire Black children to pursue STEM careers.
