Summer of Freedom 2025

Background

What does freedom sound like? This summer, WURD Radio invites you on a powerful journey to find out. Tune in to the Summer of Freedom Cultural Series—a sonic audio tour through Philadelphia’s Black history, hosted and executive produced by Solomon Jones.

Each episode explores a different historic site and the people working to preserve its legacy.

This summer, we’ll feature:

  • July 15: The Crystal Bird Fauset House (West Philadelphia)
    • Home of the first Black woman elected to a state legislature in the United States.
  • July 29: The Colored Girls Museum (Germantown)
    • Where everyday objects become artifacts of identity, memory, and liberation.
  • Philadelphia International Records
    • The groundbreaking label that launched the Philly Soul sound known as “The Sound of Philadelphia.”
  • OIC Philadelphia Headquarters
    • Founded by the late Reverend Leon H. Sullivan in 1964, OIC Philadelphia’s legacy is built on a strong foundation of empowerment, excellence, and growth. We are committed to creating a brighter future for our community, one individual at a time.

In a city where freedom was declared, fought for, and reimagined, these stories remind us that preserving our past is an act of liberation in the present.

The Summer of Freedom Cultural Series is brought to you by Keystone First, Comcast, and PECO, in partnership with the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia and the Society for the Preservation of Philadelphia African American Assets.
