This week on WURD: John Legend on the importance of voting, a Black town gets to vote after 60 years, Black Americans speak on institutional racism

Grammy Award-winning musician John Legend joined Dr. James Peterson on Evening WURDs to talk about the importance of voting and the upcoming election in the fall.

Linn Washington Jr. is a journalism professor at Temple University. He talked to Solomon Jones on Wake up With WURD about Newbern, Ala., a predominantly Black town that hasn’t had elections in 60 years and where a Black mayor was barred from taking office by white officials.

Mark Lopez is the director of race and ethnicity at the Pew Research Center. He joined Solomon to elaborate on the latest Pew report findings and highlighted Black Americans’s perceptions of structural racism and its impacts on U.S. institutions. 

Pinky Cole-Hayes, owns the celebrity-backed vegan burger chain, “Slutty Vegan,” spoke to Tonya Pendleton on Reality Check about her entrepreneurial beginnings and her upcoming pop-up Tasties in West Philadelphia.

Brenda Barbour and Elaine Curry are sisters and co-hosts of the Body Wealth Podcast. They both joined Love & Life with Carol Riddick to detail the unique experiences that Black women face in navigating the healthcare system.
