WURD Radio

Dear Freedom Journeys Salon guests,
Due to the extreme heat conditions currently affecting Philadelphia, and our commitment to hosting this program in a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment, we have made the difficult decision to postpone today’s in-person Freedom Journeys Salon.
While we will not gather in person today, the program will still air on WURD. Please tune in to WURD beginning at 1 p.m. to hear interviews with Brother Shomari, followed by the panel moderated by Solomon Jones.
We are grateful for your enthusiasm and support for Freedom Journeys, and we are working to confirm a new date for the in-person Salon. We will share updated details as soon as they are finalized. Thank you for your understanding, flexibility, and continued support of this important work. Please stay safe and cool.
Warmly,
The WURD Radio Team
As the nation prepares to celebrate 250 years of independence, there is a story that must be told—one that is too often overlooked, undervalued, and increasingly under threat. From the founding of the republic to the present day, Black Philadelphians have been central to the building of this city, this commonwealth, and this country. Their contributions to science, politics, the arts, faith, education, and community are woven into every block and boulevard of Philadelphia. The Semiquincentennial is a moment to reclaim and celebrate that legacy—on our own terms.
Join WURD Radio for the Freedom Journeys Salon, a special community gathering celebrating the extraordinary people featured in our Freedom Journeys storytelling project—both past and present. This afternoon of live conversation, reflection, great food, and music marks a powerful moment in WURD’s ongoing mission to honor 250 iconic African American Philadelphians from 1776 to 2026. We’re also debuting our newest podcast, Freedom Journeys: Sacred Places, exploring the historic spaces that anchor Black Philadelphia’s story. If you’ve been struggling with how to mark the nation’s 250th—especially at a time when Black history, culture and people are under threat—you MUST come celebrate with WURD.
