Join us this Friday, April 14th for our new and improved Jackie Robinson Day, hosted by Chris Murray. This year we’re partnering with the Paul Robeson House and Museum for their street renaming and block party in honor of Paul Robeson’s 125th birthday. Come out this Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to celebrate two titans – Jackie Robinson and Paul Robeson. We’ll be broadcasting live from the block party on 50th Street between Walnut and Sansom Streets, right next to the Robeson House and Museum located at 4951 Walnut Street.
This broadcast acknowledges the day that Jackie Robinson revolutionized Major League Baseball by breaking the racial barriers previously imposed, and this year marks the 76th anniversary of Robinson’s major league debut.
WURD Radio celebrates Jackie Robinson as a representation of resilience, dedication, commitment and perseverance. MLB also recognizes the day with an extensive and unified league-wide show of support, which has included retiring Robinson’s number throughout the league in 1997; dedicating April 15 as Jackie Robinson Day annually since 2004; and requesting that all players and on-field personnel wear his No. 42 during games scheduled on Jackie Robinson Day since 2009.
WURD is also proud to partner with the Paul Robeson House and Museum in celebration and in honor of Paul Leroy Robeson who was a man of many talents. Robeson was a football star, singer, actor, lawyer, activist, orator and linguist. He was also an unabashed advocate for the civil and human rights of people considered outsiders – African Americans in his own country and oppressed people all over the world.
This exciting event will include special guests, fun, food, activities and giveaways. We look forward to seeing you on Friday!
