(Philadelphia, PA) — WURD Radio, the only African American owned and operated talk radio station in Pennsylvania, and one of a few in the country, will be broadcasting live for the first-ever Kwanzaa Boathouse Row Light Show on Tuesday, December 26, 2017, 5:00pm — 6:00pm ET at Paine’s Park | Boathouse Row.
This exciting outdoor event will begin with the sounds of African drummers followed by a warm welcome from Jovida Hill, Office of Public Engagement. Katherine Ott Lovell will introduce Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney who will speak about this spectacular holiday event. President and CEO of WURD Radio Sara Lomax-Reese is the guest speaker and will begin speaking at 5:40pm. Come cheer with the Blackhawks Cheerleading Squad as Martine Augustine, student at Hampton University, recites a poem about the principles of Kwanzaa. Dress warmly, get your popcorn ready and bring those closest to your heart for this historical event.
“This is quite a momentous occasion for the City of Philadelphia and, especially, its Black community,” said Vincent Thompson, WURD City Hall reporter and Wake up With WURD News anchor, an early lead advocate for the Kwanzaa celebration. “For years, Kwanzaa had never been officially recognized despite so many residents observing it. We’re so proud to be a part of this moment.”
