Heard On WURD: Solomon Jones Interviews Dr. Ala Stanford

Dr. Ala Stanford, pediatric surgeon and the founder of the Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium, joined Solomon Jones last week on WURD Radio to announce an amazing initiative to vaccinate Philadelphians who’ve been impacted the most by this pandemic. 

Beginning last Friday at noon, the Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium began a 24-hour vaccination clinic lasting until the following Saturday at the Liacouras Center on Broad Street.

This first come, first served process would focus primarily on residents of zip code areas hardest hit by COVID according to the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, including 19119, Mount Airy; 19123, Northern Liberties; 19124, Juniata; 19126, Oak Lane; 19132, Strawberry Mansion; 19138, West Oak Lane; 19140, Hunting Park; 19141, Logan; 19144, Germantown; 19150, Cedarbrook; and 19151, Overbrook.

 And while zip code was what the Consortium prioritized, other factors, including profession as essential care or service workers, as well as existent health concerns including diabetes, lung disease, HIV, cardiovascular disease and more, were also taken into consideration during this vaccination process. 

Moreover, as Dr. Ala Stanford would stress, age was a crucial component in ensuring vaccination among residents, with the initiative striving to, “take care of elders,” and even establishing separate lines to ensure that senior citizens 75 and up, as well as the disabled needing special assistance, were vaccinated first and foremost. 

As of last week, the Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium was close to having vaccinated 10,000 people, and after this 24 hour initiative, the Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium vaccinated about 4,000 people this weekend.
