WURD Speaks: Brain Strain – The Effect of Trauma on Education, took place on 9/30/15 as part of our Walter P. Lomax, Jr., M.D. Speaker Series.

At WURD Speaks: Brain Strain, a panel of educators, trauma specialists and youth advocates participated in an innovative symposium that combined presentations, youth testimonials, panel discussions with subject matter experts, a brief documentary screening, and performance art to examine the impact of trauma on education, the developing brain, and our children’s ability to reach their full potential.

Participants included Hilary Beard, author of the White House Report on African-American Education; Glen Casey, a junior at the University of Pennsylvania; Arthur Evans, Ph.D., Commissioner, Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disabilities (PA); Taliba Foster, M.D., Medical Director, Children’s Crisis Treatment Center and CEO, Main Line Psychiatric; Otis Hackney, Principal, South Philadelphia High School; Michael O’Bryan, Program Manager, Youth Arts Education at Village of Arts and Humanities; and Diane Wagenhals, M.Ed., Fellow, Child Trauma Academy Program Director, Institute of Family Professionals. The panel was moderated by Nick Taliaferro, host of WURD’s weekday program “The Nick Taliaferro Show.”
