Joie Nearn, Imani Weeks and Sydne Hopkins of Science Leadership Academy scripted, filmed and edited a mini-documentary investigating colorism in the Black community. The project is called For the Love of Brown Girls.

The philosophy of #BlackGirlMagic is undeniable. And while there are plenty of examples of this in women and girls I pass on the streets daily, Erykah Badu is an embodiment of the beauty, grace and playfulness that Black Girl Magic is all about.

It can be extremely difficult to exist as a Black woman and navigate dialogues on matters concerning race and gender, especially when the two are entangled.

2015 was a defining year of social and political achievements in the African-American community, ranging from Bree Newsome relieving South Carolina of its Confederate flag to the lack of police officer indictments in the Tamir Rice and Sandra Bland cases.

Renowned race scholar and activist, Dr. Frances Cress Welsing, died on January 2 at the age of 80. Her family states that she had been hospitalized earlier in the week after suffering a stroke.

Grammy-award winning singer Natalie Cole, daughter of entertainment legend Nat “King” Cole, passed away on December 31 after a prolonged period of declining health. She was 65.

Twenty Ten Talent, a career resource for talented young Black women across the globe, recently shared an inspiring blog post called “50 TED Talks by 50 Talented Black Women.”

There were so many amazing shows out during the late 90’s and early 00’s that gave positive images of black families. Despite the current success of shows like “Empire,” “Black-Ish,” and “Scandal,” there is so much more work that has to be done.
